Renewing a worship space for a growing community
For the parishioners of St. Elizabeth of Portugal Parish in Milpitas, the church is more than a building—it is a gathering place that has served generations of families. When the parish set out to refresh the interior of its main worship space, the goal was to honor the church’s history while ensuring the sanctuary could continue serving the community for years to come.
Originally conceived as a modest altar renovation, the project evolved through close collaboration with parish leadership and long-time parishioners who had carefully saved funds to improve their beloved church. The scope expanded to include a comprehensive redesign of the sanctuary and worship area.
TOPA Architecture reimagined the interior to strengthen the visual connection between congregation and altar while improving accessibility and functionality. Soft curves frame the sanctuary, gently drawing the congregation toward the center of worship and creating a sense of embrace within the space.
Light and symbolism play an important role in the renewed sanctuary. A newly commissioned stained-glass window from a local Santa Clara studio anchors the altar and frames the crucifix, extending the visual language of the church’s original windows. Twelve small windows representing the apostles reinforce this connection to tradition.
Thoughtful lighting and carefully selected materials enhance both the atmosphere and durability of the space, creating a welcoming sanctuary designed to serve the Milpitas community for generations.
