Revitalizing a historic landmark for modern community use
Originally constructed in 1913, the historic B.O. Curry Building is a registered landmark in downtown Campbell. Over time, layers of renovations had obscured the building’s original character and limited its usefulness for modern tenants. TOPA Architecture was commissioned to revitalize the 3,300-square-foot structure, restoring its architectural identity while preparing it for contemporary commercial use.
The design focused on removing incompatible additions and revealing the building’s historic brick walls and exposed rafters. The second floor, previously divided into small offices, was opened to create a flexible workspace better suited to modern collaborative environments. At the ground level, the plan accommodates an existing tenant while creating an additional market-ready retail or office space.
Accessibility improvements were integrated through the addition of a new lift. During construction, the team discovered that an earlier seismic retrofit had not been completed properly, requiring structural corrections to bring the building up to current safety standards.
Material selections intentionally contrast modern finishes with the historic structure, allowing the original architecture to remain the defining feature while supporting durable, contemporary workplace environments.
